The lancet depicts Salome carrying the head of Saint John the Baptist on a platter, watched by King Herod and his courtiers.  The top and bottom panels are decorated with tiny blossoms in blue, silver and gold. In the main panels, King Herod sits on a throne beside Queen Herodias, the former wife of his half-brother. John the Baptist had condemned this marriage so Herod had him imprisoned. When Salome, Herodias’ daughter, danced for the king she was granted the head of John the Baptist.
